It’s the new year, and this year our first priority is bringing cloud syncing to Adventurer’s Codex. This means we’ll be moving away from the way Adventurer’s Codex has worked from its inception. We’re excited to make this transition, and in preparation, we want to give all of you some information on what to expect during the transition as well as a behind-the-scenes look into what we’re working on to make cloud syncing happen.

We’re working on a few smaller releases during this process, so don’t worry. We’re not going dark again. We’re focused on improving the stability and testability of our codebase as well as shipping new features we know you’ll love.

Why are we doing this?

When Adventurer’s Codex started, we focused on leveraging local browser storage as a quick and easy way to build free software. Over time, as the app evolved and our user-base grew, it became clear that our local storage solution was no longer tenable and that the best course is to move to saving everyone’s character and campaign data in the cloud.

What does this mean to you?

The biggest change for you, our users, is that your characters and campaigns will be saved to the cloud and available on any device. This should not only improve the experience of using Adventurer’s Codex, but also help with any data loss from anyone who accidentally clears their browser cookies.

Please check out our FAQ section about how we currently store your data, and back up your characters and campaigns often before clearing your browser cookies.

This will mean that all users will be required to sign up for a free account to use Adventurer’s Codex. If you already have an account, then you’re already prepared for the transition.

Once the transition begins, your data will be safely saved to the cloud the next time you visit Adventurer’s Codex, and we’ll guide you through the process as it happens. Once the transition is complete, everything will be back to normal and you can continue enjoying Adventurer’s Codex, now with all of your characters and campaigns on any device!

As with any transition like this, it is best to keep a current export of your characters and campaigns in case something happens during the process. We’re doing our best to make sure that everything goes as smoothly as possible, but with thousands of users and even more characters and campaigns, errors can happen.

We’ll be posting here and on our /r/adventurerscodex reddit with more updates, so don’t touch that dial.
